How to remove GST from a total

  1. Enter the GST-inclusive amount — the final price that already has tax in it.

The reverse GST formula

When a price already includes GST, you cannot simply take a percentage of the total — that would overstate the tax. Instead you divide it out:

  • Base amount = Total ÷ (1 + GST rate ÷ 100)
  • GST included = Total − Base amount

For example, a GST-inclusive price of ₹11,800 at 18% gives a base of ₹10,000 (11,800 ÷ 1.18) and ₹1,800 of GST. For an intra-state sale that ₹1,800 is ₹900 CGST + ₹900 SGST; for an inter-state sale it is ₹1,800 IGST.

When is reverse GST useful?

It is handy whenever you only know the final, tax-included figure — for example reading the GST out of an MRP, splitting a cash receipt into taxable value and tax for your books, or checking how much tax is sitting inside a quoted "all-inclusive" price. The reverse GST formula

Base price = Inclusive amount ÷ (1 + GST rate ÷ 100). GST inside = Inclusive amount − Base price.

Example at 18%: ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 base, so the GST hidden inside is ₹1,800. At 5%: ₹2,100 ÷ 1.05 = ₹2,000 base, GST ₹100. At 40%: ₹70,000 ÷ 1.40 = ₹50,000 base, GST ₹20,000.

The trap to avoid: taking 18% of the inclusive total and subtracting it. 18% of ₹11,800 is ₹2,124, giving a "base" of ₹9,676 — wrong by ₹324. The error grows with the rate, so at 40% the wrong method is off by thousands. Always divide, never subtract.

Where reverse calculation shows up in real life

  1. MRP goods. Retail prices in India are tax-inclusive by law, so the sticker price hides the GST. Reverse calculation tells a reseller the true base cost inside an MRP.
  2. Comparing quotes. One vendor quotes ₹10,000 + GST, another quotes "₹11,500 all-inclusive". Reverse the second one (₹11,500 ÷ 1.18 ≈ ₹9,746) and you discover the "expensive-looking" quote is actually cheaper.
  3. All-in budgets. A customer says "my budget is ₹50,000 total". Reverse it to find the taxable value you can quote — ₹42,373 at 18% — before building the quotation.
  4. Bookkeeping. Receipts that show only a grand total still need the taxable value and tax recorded separately in your books; reverse calculation splits them.
  5. Checking invoices. If a supplier's "inclusive" bill doesn't reverse cleanly to a sensible base at the stated rate, the arithmetic — or the rate — is wrong.
What is a reverse GST calculator?

How is this different from the normal GST calculator?
The normal calculator adds GST to a base price. The reverse calculator starts from the GST-inclusive total and removes the tax to find the base. Both directions live in the full GST calculator too.
Why can't I just subtract 18% from the total?
Because GST was charged on the base, not the total. Subtracting 18% of the total removes too much. Divide by 1.18 instead — that's the mathematically correct inverse.
Does this work for any GST rate?
Yes — 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 18%, 40% or any custom rate. The formula is the same: divide by (1 + rate/100).
