How to use the GST calculator
- Enter the amount. To add GST, enter the base price. To remove GST, enter the GST-inclusive total.
- Pick the GST rate — tap a common slab or choose Custom.
- Choose Add or Remove GST, and whether the sale is intra-state (CGST+SGST) or inter-state (IGST).
- Read the instant breakdown — base, tax split, and total.
Understanding the GST split
For a sale within the same state (intra-state), the total GST is divided equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For a sale between two states (inter-state), a single IGST (Integrated GST) is charged at the full rate. The total tax amount is the same either way — only the split changes.
Current GST slabs (GST 2.0, 2025)
From 22 September 2025, India simplified its GST structure. The main rates now are:
- 0% — many essentials (most foods, UHT milk, Indian breads, individual health & life insurance).
- 5% — merit rate for common household goods, packaged food and most medicines.
- 18% — standard rate for most goods and services, electronics and small cars.
- 40% — luxury and "sin" goods such as premium cars, tobacco and aerated drinks.
- 0.25% & 3% — special rates that continue for diamonds and precious stones (0.25%) and gold, silver and other precious metals (3%).
The earlier 12% and 28% slabs have been removed, with those items moved to the new rates.
Worked examples
Adding GST (intra-state). You quote a service at ₹10,000 to a client in your own state at 18% GST. GST = 10,000 × 18% = ₹1,800, split as CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900. Invoice total: ₹11,800.
Adding GST (inter-state). Same job, but the client is in another state. The tax is identical (₹1,800) but appears as a single IGST line instead of the CGST/SGST split — which is exactly what must print on the invoice.
Removing GST. A supplier bills you ₹5,900 "inclusive of 18% GST". Base = 5,900 ÷ 1.18 = ₹5,000; GST inside = ₹900. Knowing the base matters when you compare quotes, negotiate, or record purchases. (For inclusive prices, this is the job of the Reverse GST Calculator.)
The classic mistake to avoid: removing GST is not subtracting 18% of the total. 18% of ₹5,900 is ₹1,062 — subtracting that gives ₹4,838, which is wrong. The correct method divides by 1.18, because the tax was computed on the smaller base, not on the total.
When you'll reach for this calculator
Pricing a product or service and needing the tax-inclusive figure for a quotation; checking a vendor's invoice arithmetic before booking it; deciding what to display as MRP; back-calculating the taxable value from a customer's budget ("I can pay ₹25,000 all-in — what's my pre-tax price?"); or splitting tax correctly between CGST/SGST and IGST for invoice compliance. If you're setting a selling price from your cost and desired profit, the Profit Margin Calculator does that whole chain in one step.
