What are the current GST rates in India?

Under GST 2.0, effective 22 September 2025, India follows a simplified two-slab structure: 5% for essential goods and services and 18% as the standard rate, plus a 40% demerit rate for luxury and sin goods. Many daily essentials remain at 0% (exempt). The table below summarises the slabs.

GST slabApplies toTypical examples
0% (exempt)Basic essentialsFresh fruits & vegetables, milk, curd, books
5%Merit / essential goods & servicesPackaged food items, medicines, footwear, restaurants
18%Standard rate — most goods & servicesElectronics, cosmetics, most services, appliances
40%Demerit / luxury & sin goodsPan masala, tobacco, aerated drinks, luxury cars

Rates and classifications are set by the GST Council. Always verify the latest notifications on the official GST portal (gst.gov.in) and CBIC (cbic-gst.gov.in) before filing. Read our plain-language guide: GST 2.0 explained.

Getting started

How do you use these GST tools?

Open any tool from the menu, type your amount, pick a GST rate, and the result appears instantly — most tools calculate as you type. Invoices, quotations and bills can be saved as PDF straight from your browser. Here are the exact steps to get your first result:

  1. Pick a tool — for a quick tax split use the GST calculator; for a bill, open the invoice generator.
  2. Enter your numbers — the amount, the GST rate (5%, 18% or 40%), and whether the sale is intra-state (CGST + SGST) or inter-state (IGST).
  3. Read the break-up — every tool shows the base amount, the exact tax, and the total, formatted in Indian rupees.
  4. Save or print — invoices, quotations and billbook entries can be downloaded as PDF with one click; nothing is stored online.
FAQ

What do people usually ask about these tools?

These are the six most common questions we receive about the free GST tools — covering pricing, privacy, invoice validity, GSTIN checks, supported tax rates and mobile use. Each answer is short and practical, and the tools themselves link to deeper guides wherever a topic needs more detail.

Are these GST tools really free?
Yes. All 8 tools are completely free to use with no sign-up, no limits, and no watermarks.
Is my data safe?
Everything runs inside your browser. The amounts you type, the invoices you create, and the GSTINs you check are never sent to any server.
Can I use the invoice for actual billing?
The invoice generator creates a clean, GST-formatted invoice you can save as a PDF. For legal compliance and e-invoicing requirements, please confirm the details with your accountant.
Does the GSTIN validator check if a business is registered?
No. It checks the format and checksum of the number only. To confirm a live registration or active status, use the official portal at gst.gov.in.
Which GST rates do the calculators support?
The GST 2.0 slabs — 5%, 18% and the 40% demerit rate — plus custom rates, so older rates like 12% and 28% can still be entered manually where needed.
Do the tools work on mobile phones?
Yes. Every tool is mobile-friendly and works in any modern browser on Android or iPhone, including PDF downloads for invoices, quotations and bills.
